In a significant diplomatic achievement, Djibouti's Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been elected as the new chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), defeating Kenya's Raila Odinga in a closely contested election. This victory marks a pivotal moment for Djibouti and underscores its growing influence within the African Union.

The election, held on February 15, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was characterized by intense competition and multiple rounds of voting. Youssouf secured the required majority after Odinga withdrew from the race following the sixth round. The final tally showed Youssouf with 26 votes compared to Odinga's 22.

Youssouf's candidacy had previously garnered support from various African nations, and he had actively sought backing from Morocco during his visit, expressing his desire for Moroccan support in his bid for the AUC leadership. This collaboration highlights the strengthening ties between Morocco and Djibouti, especially as Djibouti recently opened a consulate in Laayoune, Western Sahara.

In his remarks following the election, Youssouf emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the need to address pressing challenges facing Africa. He expressed his commitment to enhancing the continent's global standing and fostering unity among member states.

Youssouf succeeds Moussa Faki Mahamat, who has held the position since 2017. His election is seen as a step towards revitalizing the AUC's role in addressing Africa's socio-economic issues and promoting sustainable development across the continent.
