Mauritania’s parliament, alongside its counterparts in other African nations, has signed the Rabat Declaration, issued at the conclusion of the meeting of heads of parliament from Atlantic African countries. This initiative, spearheaded by the King of Morocco, aims to transform the African Atlantic coast into a hub for human connectivity, economic integration, social prosperity, and international investment appeal.
Mauritanian Parliament President Emphasizes Regional Cooperation
Speaking at the meeting of heads of parliament from Atlantic African countries in Rabat, Mohamed Ould Mekt, President of the Mauritanian Parliament, emphasized the pivotal role of African Atlantic parliaments. He stated, “By virtue of the legitimacy granted by the peoples of the region, the parliaments of Atlantic African countries can unify regional efforts and strengthen joint initiatives to make this coastal space a true oasis of cooperation, peace, and stability.”
Monitoring Government Commitments to Development
Ould Mekt highlighted the capacity of Atlantic parliaments to monitor governments’ commitment to implementing regional projects and initiatives related to peace and development. He stressed the importance of building trust between governments and their citizens by enhancing transparency, closely monitoring regional development and cooperation projects, and combating corruption.

“The parliaments of Atlantic African nations bear a historic responsibility to lead their peoples toward a brighter future,” Ould Mekt added. “This can only be achieved through concerted parliamentary efforts, creating spaces for dialogue among legislators, and exchanging experiences and expertise.”

The Mauritanian Parliament President also underscored the need to establish a foundation for a parliamentary network or forum. This platform would serve as a space to discuss shared challenges and develop strategies to address them effectively.
