Reuters, citing informed sources within the Syrian Central Bank, reported that the new authorities in Syria plan to freeze all assets belonging to businessmen affiliated with the former regime led by Bashar al-Assad. The Central Bank of Syria has issued directives to all banks to freeze the activities of these businessmen without exception.
Since Bashar al-Assad's ouster and his subsequent flight, the "Qaterji" company, which had close ties to the former regime and was previously under U.S. sanctions, has been subjected to a complete ban. While the company ostensibly operated in the oil trade, it was revealed to have been involved in drug trafficking. On Thursday, the decision to freeze assets was extended to all entities connected to the former regime.
Opposition forces, having seized control of the Syrian capital and the Central Bank, have suspended all financial activities of individuals linked to the former regime and frozen their accounts in all banks. This move aims to initiate legal proceedings to recover the looted funds of the Syrian people.
These measures are part of the new government's efforts to enforce the rule of law on everyone, including figures from Jabhat al-Nusra and members of opposition forces themselves. Although some individuals whose assets were frozen have contested the decisions and managed to transfer some funds abroad, the government has begun implementing stricter measures to ensure the legality and robustness of its actions.
